Complementary Nutrients: A healthy diet. HOW IT WORKS: Glusamine is a naturally occurring substance found in all tissues of the body. In joints, glucosamine stimulates the manufacture of glycosaminoglycans, which are key structural components of cartilage; in addition, glucosamine stimulates joint repair when joints are damaged by wear-and-tear conditions such as osteoarthritis. RESEARCH: Clinical research has confirmed the effectiveness of glucosamine sulfate (GLS) in humans. In one placebo-controlled study, participants using GLS had significant alleviation of symptoms with no adverse reactions. A comparative study with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) found GLS to be as effective as NSAIDs in reducing pain. In addition, GLS was far better tolerated, with none of the side effects associated with the NSAIDs.
